Future of London arranged a visit to Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea on 29 November for our members. We began with an introduction to the area by Keith Trotter from the Nine Elms Delivery Team, set up to support the complex partnership involved in regenerating the area. Identified as an Opportunity Area in the 2003 London Plan, a number of significant developments are progressing, including the northern line extension, and transformation of New Covent Garden Market and Battersea Power Station. Helen Evans of the New Covent Garden Market Authority took us through the market transformation plans. Starting on site in 2013, the current market building that is no longer fit for purpose will be replaced by brand new facilities. These will both provide better services to the wholesale businesses that operate in the market, as well as providing a new public face, the ‘Garden Heart’. After a short walk to the Power Station, Jeremy Castle of Treasury Holdings presented the approved scheme, which includes reinventing the station as a renewable energy generator, and reinstating a large section of the River Walk. We were treated to a tour of the site at the end.
Keith and Helen’s presentations are below.
