The ‘Green Deal’, the coalition government’s flagship environmental policy programme, is intended to leverage around £12 billion of investment into residential and commercial energy efficiency. The Green Deal mechanism will enable households and businesses to install energy efficiency improvements to their property from registered providers at no upfront cost, with repayments attached to the property rather than the individual.
This project, supported by EDF Energy, seeks to examine the prospects for, and potential impact of, the Green Deal for London. It will look at the government’s policy and legislative proposals, and explore their implications for London’s housing stock, economy and communities. Our research will primarily focus on the role that London Boroughs can play in driving demand for the Green Deal and widening access to the scheme, in order to ensure the maximum environmental, social and economic benefit across the capital. It will make recommendations to central government and to London’s democratic representatives, businesses and community organisations in how to ensure the Green Deal is implemented in the most efficient and effective way possible.
