Improving the energy efficiency of the built environment is a major challenge for London. Recent figures recorded a 19 percent increase in fuel poverty in London. The Capital’s carbon emissions have fallen by just 7 per cent since 1990, despite a 60 per cent reduction being targeted by 2025. The ‘Green Deal’, the coalition government’s flagship environmental policy programme, is intended to leverage around £12 billion of investment into residential and commercial energy efficiency. The Green Deal mechanism will enable households and businesses to install energy efficiency improvements to their property from registered providers at no upfront cost, with repayments attached to the property rather than the individual.
Throughout 2012 Future of London, supported by EDF Energy, has examined the prospects for, and potential impact of, the Green Deal for London. We published our findings in May 2012 – Delivering Energy Efficiency in London. During 2013, we will be running a programme of events that considers the practical delivery barriers for energy efficiency in London, and how London Boroughs can help drive demand for energy efficiency measures throughout the communities that they serve.
