Housing Events

Here you will find all of the latest news, updates and outputs from our Housing Events Series.  Over the next 12 months we will be convening policymakers and practitioners to get to grips with the major challenges we face in delivering the levels and types of housing that London needs, against a backdrop of significant public sector investment cuts and radical policy changes.

New Ways to Pay: Mixed economies for housing and regeneration delivery using TIF, the New Homes Bonus and more

The New Ways to Pay
Bitty, scrappy, messy and non-strategic. That is the way that housing and regeneration in London will be funded (if at all) in the coming years. That was the conclusion of the contributors and audience at the third in Future of London’s Breakfast Seminar series: New Ways to Pay.

New Systems: devolved delivery and the bonfire of quangos

Delivery in uncertain times
The second instalment in this year’s Breakfast Seminar Series turned its gaze on the new institutional landscape, as quangos have been hoisted on to the bonfire, or if not, have at least been left with singed eyebrows and minor smoke inhalation. Our panel comprised Dick Sorabji – London Councils, Nick Taylor – HCA, Toby Lloyd – Shelter, Mark Baigent – LB Greenwich and Andy Gatrell – East Thames Group. Also includes videos from panel responses to audience questions.

From social housing to ‘big society’ housing: can community-led housing deliver regeneration in straightened times?

'Big Society' housing
We examined the role that community-led housing might play in the future development of London, in the context of the Comprehensive Spending Review launched that day, and the Coalition Government’s vision for the Big Society. Presentations came from David Lunts (Director of HCA London) and Philippe Castaing (Chair of Brixton Green). They were joined by panelists Alisdair Chant, Managing Director at Berkeley Homes, and Alex Morton, a Research Fellow at centre-right think tank Policy Exchange

Intermediate Housing: What next for London?

Intermediate housing – part of the solution to the affordable housing challenge?
A few years ago ‘intermediate housing’ was all the rage. A flood of research emphasised the need for housing options for those priced out of owner occupation but unable to access social housing, and showing how, in places like London, this missing middle included almost everyone. Presenting on the morning were Andrew Heywood (Visiting Fellow at the Smith Institute), Brendan Sarsfield (Chief Executive at Family Mosaic) and Mark Baigent (Assistant Director of Strategy and Regeneration, LB Greenwich)
