On October 15th, we welcomed the first round of candidates from Future of London’s new Leaders Plus career development programme.
The nine-month series of masterclasses was developed in response to requests from Future of London’s Steering Group for a “next-level” offering, allowing participants to build on skills developed in the Future London Leaders programme or through other career-development avenues. Leaders Plus provides an array of strategic tools as well as senior-level insight and mentoring to support candidates as they take on increasing responsibility and risk. This first session was an Applied Leadership Skills workshop, led by Miffa Salter of Urbancanda.
Lovell, which sponsors Future London Leaders, has also provided valuable seed money to help launch this new programme.
Leaders Plus aims to:
- Build skills, confidence and resource base across the spectrum of stakeholder-focused tasks, from finding project funding to facing the press;
- Translate best practice in leadership, public engagement and delivery into real-world use;
- Provide a forum to discuss the difficult questions arising with greater responsibility; and
- Develop candidates’ network and their exposure to senior professionals across regeneration, housing, planning and transport.
Key elements of the programme include:
Mentoring: Each candidate is supported by a senior mentor during the programme, ensuring an ongoing sounding-board for development.
Personal Development: The focus here is enhancing leadership skills gained through FLL and other career development, and translating those into the real world. These modules are run by Miffa Salter of Urbancanda.
External Affairs: Sessions on Facing the Press, Facing the Public and Working with Stakeholders, led by providers including Urbancanda and Bracket, help candidates communicate clearly, even in times of chaos.
Management and Delivery: These nuts-and-bolts senior seminars, led by highly experienced directors and practitioners working across the sector, look at finding project funding, generating inward investment, navigating procurement and more.
Live Case Study: Each Leaders Plus round will also use an ongoing regeneration project as the context for testing what they’re learning – and proposing.
