On 23 September, Future of London welcomed Future London Leaders 26 – the latest round of candidates who now join more than 500 graduates in Future of London’s Alumni Network.
2020 has been a year of milestones as we kicked off the first round of Greater Manchester Leaders Plus and celebrated 10 years of Future London Leaders (FLL).
Sponsored in part by Lovell and hosted by Lewis Silkin, FLL is exclusive to Future of London members and invited guests. It is designed to support the professional development of London’s most promising practitioners, with a focus on regeneration, housing, transport, infrastructure and economic development.
The online launch gave candidates a flavour of what was to come with introductions from the Future of London team and from course facilitators Miffa Salter and Brennan Jacoby of Urbancanda. Miffa and Brennan lead the five leadership modules which form the core of the course.
These modules help candidates understand their own leadership style through an in-depth self-assessment of their values and behaviours, undertaken ahead of the course launch. Using this as a springboard, candidates collectively learn how to stretch their individual leadership styles and build confidence and skill in managing diverse projects and teams.
Candidates reflect FoL’s wider cross-sector network and cohorts are kept small to create a safe space to problem-solve, discuss ideas and the wider world and to encourage peer-to-peer learning.
Technology is the theme for Future London Leaders 26 with candidates exploring the potential for technology to influence our cities. Replacing the usual field trips for this round, guest speakers will present live case studies on how technology is affecting planning, housing, regeneration, infrastructure and economic development and discuss the opportunities and impacts on practitioners and the communities they serve.
The case studies are designed to inspire and encourage candidates in developing their own Proposals for London. Drawing on the theme and lessons learnt throughout the course, Proposals for London are five-minute PechaKucha-style presentations at the end of the course that give candidates a chance to showcase their creativity and an innovative idea for making London a more liveable city.
Mentoring is also a key part of the programme and candidates are personally matched and supported throughout the course by mentors who are senior-level practitioners from complementary organisations and sectors. Mentors volunteer their time to share knowledge and experience and provide a vital sounding board for candidate concerns and ideas as well as long-term career planning.
In 2021 we’ll be celebrating all 500 graduates and the support of their mentors with all alumni, mentors, FoL friends and supporters invited to a special event. Watch this space for details.
