Our newest Future London Leaders (FLL33) presented their ideas for creating meaningful, and measurable, social value for communities.
After a six-month programme of learning and field trips, our Future London Leaders offered quick-fire Pecha Kucha-style presentations on social value.
Their innovative ideas included:
- greening government buildings
- network tools for social prescribing and wellbeing
- meanwhile spaces for skateboarders
- incentivising private developers toward social value activities

Candidates presented their ideas to an audience of colleagues, mentors, alumni, course contributors, and friends of Future of London. After a quick round of Q&A, the audience were invited to cast their votes under the categories of ‘Favourite idea’, ‘Most feasible idea’ and ‘Best pitch’.

Social Value Hub
Agnes Marsden Jeeves, Development Engagement Manager, LB Hammersmith & Fulham
The Social Value Hub is a digital platform that addresses current challenges in delivering social value. Communities can have a say in what is most important to them so that contractors and councils can agree a bespoke, meaningful and sustainable programme to deliver social value.
A constant feedback loop will allow communities and councils to monitor social value delivery and capture long-term measures of non-physical outcomes through local stories. The Hub will facilitate knowledge-sharing across communities and foster transparency, co-operation and bottom-up delivery of social value to support successful urban developments and thriving communities.
Affordable repair services from local, ethnically diverse companies
Mitin Patel, Head of Estate Services, LB Westminster
Mitin proposed the creation of a council managed framework (TRUST) with a schedule of rates providing value for money on a range of works. The aim was to offer residents direct access to a choice of repair services which do not form part of the landlord’s statutory responsibilities.
We would focus on using local companies with ethnically diverse ownership, who would all have social value measures in place to give back to the local community. The residents would be able to select the contractor of their choice to carry out the works with the local authority overseeing the process to provide a guarantor risk free assurance.
Where is the small Social Value?

Unlike ‘big ticket’ regeneration projects, which usually yield impressive Social Value (SV) benefits, the smaller scale ‘major’ developments do not seem to have the same SV traction.
Government investment is set to plug gaps in in-house council planning expertise and there will be a 35% increase in ‘major’ application planning fees. So now is the time to harness these funding incentives to encourage councils to put social value at the heart of both corporate and local plan policy as ‘material’ planning considerations.
The result would be planning policies that clearly identify the types of SV input required from smaller schemes with the in-house expertise to guide developers towards achieving it.
