How can mixed-use development and council-developer partnerships create genuinely lasting places? Join us for a field trip to Coronation Square and Motion in Leyton to find out.
This field trip takes in two neighbouring schemes in Leyton that together tell a story about how regeneration can anchor new communities, activate underused land, and bring a mix of uses that goes beyond housing. From a new leisure centre and resident courtyard to a rooftop garden on a former industrial site, both projects raise important questions about what good placemaking looks like in practice.

Why visit?
The field trip will move across both sites, with on-site presentations and time for questions and discussion. Together, Coronation Square and Motion offer a lens on some of the most pressing tensions in urban regeneration today, including:
- Navigating council and developer relationships and how these shape what gets built
- Mixing uses — leisure, housing, community space — and how that contributes to placemaking
- Stakeholder engagement and what meaningful involvement looks like on the ground
- Creating a catalyst for change in an industrial and railside context
- Designing resident-centred spaces, from courtyards to rooftop gardens, within commercial constraints
What to expect on the trip
- An on-site introduction at Coronation Square, including a tour of The Score Leisure Centre and resident courtyard
- A walk to Motion Lea Bridge Road, with an overview of the project concept and a view from the roof garden
- Presentations and Q&A led by Justin Laskin and Charina Coronado from PTE
- Time for attendee questions and open discussion at both sites
About the Placemaking in Challenging Times programme
This field trip is part of our Placemaking in Challenging Times programme, which examines how the places we build and regenerate shape the communities that live in them, particularly in a context of increasing demand, limited resources, and difficult trade-offs. (Read more about the programme.)
Through research and events, the programme explores what it takes to create neighbourhoods that are rooted in local context, designed for long-term resilience, and built around the needs of the people who call them home.
