Field trip: Healthy housing in Hackney

Join our Health & Housing Impact Network to find out how the architects of an award-winning housing project created healthier homes for Hackney residents.

Architects Karakusevic Carson will lead a tour of their award-winning Kings Crescent scheme in Hackney. They will share their experience of designing healthier, sustainable homes with the local community and insight from post-occupancy evaluation. We'll be focusing on the new build aspect of this development.

This field trip is the second event in this year’s Health and Housing Impact Network programme which is exploring what decisions need to be made when and by whom to ensure the best possible outcomes for current and future residents.

We are also bringing together representatives from the council’s housing and public health teams, as well as the scheme’s engineering consultants, for a frank discussion about the challenges of aligning housing, health and environmental priorities in practice.

When: Tues 9 July, 2024, 9.30am to 1pm
Where: Hackney - meeting place TBC

Participants will:

  • Learn from those involved how this scheme was delivered to meet both environmental and health objectives.
  • Hear examples of how tensions between policy and practice can be resolved in new build housing
  • Better understand how to build consensus between partners to address issues such as overheating and ventilation
  • Be inspired by the scheme's play street and hear how the team overcame risks and concerns about this.
