Achieving Net Zero: Digital Conference Week

As part of Future of London’s major 2020 programme, Achieving Net Zero, we ran a week-long event series providing practical insight, inspiration and a platform for debate to explore how London’s Built Environment sector is achieving its Net Zero ambitions.

From behaviour change to the financial cost of Net Zero to the practical steps required for a green recovery, we examined how planning, housing, regeneration, infrastructure and economic development will have to adapt and how public, private and third sectors will need to collaborate to achieve net zero.

Ideas for the Future

Digital conference week kicked off with a welcome from the Future of London team and seven inspiring Net Zero ideas for the future, from our Future London Leaders and Leaders Plus graduates.

Would you like to know how London could be transformed by sustainable rooftop development, how collaboration can deliver the net zero homes we need, and how cargo bikes will save our city?

Climate change needs behaviour change

Achieving Net Zero Conference catch-up day 2

We all know that to tackle climate change we’ll need to adapt our behaviour, but how?

In this webinar we explored what councils, communities, contractors and consultants can do to embed holistic net zero thinking and behaviours and how can we move out of silos and towards collaborative working, with cross-sector insight and practical recommendations for the built environment.

The cost of action and the cost of inaction

Achieving Net Zero Conference catch-up day 3

Achieving net zero is going to cost money. How can the public and private sectors work together to pay for net zero? Just as critically, how can we make sure that the benefits and burdens of paying for it are spread equally amongst all communities?

In this webinar we learnt lessons from California, to understand how net zero design can actually reduce costs, and to hear a compelling case for why we should act now – and not in five years time. Plus a frank reflection on the financial costs of climatic events on our cities and the need to invest in climate adaptation as well as mitigation strategies.

Towards Solutions

Achieving Net Zero Conference catch-up day 4

In this fast-paced and interactive workshop we explored the practical next steps required to deliver London’s green recovery.

Built environment experts kicked us off with three-minute provocations before we jumped into breakout groups to debate potential solutions for improving air quality, building healthy streets, encouraging a circular economy model and retrofitting existing buildings.
