Housing beyond shelter – Fostering psychological safety and community

London’s housing crisis extends beyond physical shelter to encompass psychological safety, community, and personal growth. This session explored how social infrastructure, inclusive design, and trauma-informed support can transform housing from a survival space into one that enables residents to thrive.

Speakers shared experiences of hidden homelessness, the impact of discrimination, and the importance of community-led initiatives.

Speakers

  • Richard James, Chief Executive Officer, YMCA St Paul’s Group (Chair)
  • Sade Walters, YMCA World Change Agent and Youth Ambassador

Richard James, YMCA St Paul’s Group

YMCA St Paul’s Group is one of London’s leading providers of supported housing for young and vulnerable people, including the award-winning Y:Cube scheme, which delivers safe, modular, and community-focused homes.

Richard framed London’s housing situation as a profound social challenge. He highlighted how young adults often struggle to access affordable housing, facing barriers such as low wages, limited financial support, and a lack of guarantors or rental history.

Richard also emphasised the shortage of homes allocated to younger people and the importance of providing supported housing that offers safe, structured environments where residents can regain stability and engage in personal development.

  • Only 17% of Londoners from lower-income backgrounds occupy professional roles, compared to 30% nationally, reflecting economic barriers that intersect with housing insecurity and limit social mobility.
  • Young people are frequently required to move outside London to find affordable accommodation, resulting in the loss of local support networks, employment opportunities, and community connections — factors that can exacerbate vulnerability and mental health pressures.
  • We should prioritise real stories and practical insights from residents to understand what makes homes and communities not just safe, but supportive, empowering, and life-enhancing.

“It’s not just about a roof over your head—housing is where purpose, community, and hope begin.” – Richard James

Sade Walters, YMCA World Change Agent and YMCA St Paul’s Group volunteer

Sade has led campaigns to improve access to safe, inclusive housing and support for young people. Her leadership and impact were recognised when she was named Young Leader of the Year at the YMCA Youth Matters Awards 2024.

  • Y: Cube is a modular, self-contained housing system developed by YMCA St Paul’s Group to foster neighbourly interaction, inclusion, and a sense of belonging. The project shows that it’s possible to build quality homes for residents while supporting community cohesion.
  • Ageism, ableism, and landlord stigma create real obstacles for young, disabled, or unemployed residents seeking housing. “’It is often advised (to) “Don’t say you’re coming from the YMCA… your application will be rejected.”
  • Participatory design and resident engagement allow individuals to co-create safe, welcoming spaces, strengthening social cohesion.
  • The sector must challenge stereotypes, reform policies, and ensure all residents have equitable access to quality housing.

“It’s more than just having a room… it’s about the community and the neighbourhood that surrounds it.” – Sade Walters
