Future of London network invited to fill in retrofit survey

Have your say in a Government survey on planning policy on retrofit versus demolition and redevelopment, which is an increasingly important issue for the built environment sector.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) is considering whether national planning policy and guidance needs updating in relation to the demolition and redevelopment or retrofit of buildings.

MHCLG has invited the Future of London network to take part in a stakeholder survey to inform this survey.

“We’d like you to tell us your perspective on demolition and retrofit in national planning policy and guidance, and whether you think changes are needed,” according to MHCLG’s survey invitation.

“The survey will cover topics including perceptions towards local and national planning policy, the factors that influence decision-making in planning, and potential changes to national planning policy and guidance.”

The debate over retrofit versus demolition and rebuild caught light when plans to demolish the Marks & Spencer building on Oxford Street turned into a high-profile test case.

There is a growing recognition of the importance of taking account of embodied carbon in development decisions, as discussed at our recent Making the Most of Retrofit event.

We would encourage members of our network to take part in the survey to ensure MHCLG receives responses from informed and diverse perspectives. MHCLG estimates it takes 10-15 minutes and it closes on 31 October.
